Do’s and don’ts

  • Do keep in touch with the new starter before they begin work on day one.
  • Do imagine yourself in their shoes when thinking about what sort of communication they might find helpful.
  • Do aim to excite the newcomer about the business before they join.

  • Don’t just assume that someone else will have covered a process, for example, arranging for the new starter to get their equipment; while other departments will be involved in onboarding, it is your responsibility to ensure that everything has been dealt with.
  • Don’t overwhelm your recruit with too much information before they join.
  • Don’t send the new starter a lot of admin or training to complete before day one; too much can disengage them before they even begin.
