The employee may need training in the skills required to perform the role, particularly if they are new to this type of role or parts of it.
Consider the best ways of upskilling the employee, bearing in mind their preferences, the particular skills involved and the employee’s previous experience. For example, it might be best for them to observe colleagues and then try out elements themselves in a training simulation environment. Getting the new starter to consider how strong performers in your team carry out their role can be a great exercise to help them upskill.
Involving other members of the team in this element of the onboarding process is likely to be beneficial. Work with them to identify areas where they could support the new starter or any hidden areas of day-to-day work you may not be aware of as a manager. It is often employees who are performing jobs on a day-to-day basis who have the best ideas about how to introduce an employee to the role.
