While HR takes responsibility for designing and delivering some of the onboarding programme, for example, the welcome and introduction to the business and the online training, such as HR Policies, Inclusivity and Modern Slavery, it is important not to treat any corporate “Induction day” or similar event as your new starter’s only introduction to the organisation.
You, as the employee’s line manager, should take the lead role in helping them to settle in and perform effectively. You should take overall responsibility for building and delivering a good onboarding experience, and make sure that other people give their contribution as necessary.
To begin with, understand what the organisation provides as part of the onboarding programme. You can then build on this to create an onboarding plan for your new starter.
The time you spend with the employee at this stage, in getting to know them and helping them to settle in, will create the conditions in which they can have a positive experience and set them up for success in the role.
