Do’s and don’ts

  • Do think about what you need the new starter to be competent at in three months’ and six months’ time; this will help you to understand what to include in the onboarding plan.
  • Do think about who the new starter needs to engage with in their role to be successful.

  • Don’t underestimate the time you need to spend on onboarding; you will need to be on hand to answer questions and give guidance and feedback.
  • Don’t take on everything yourself – consult your existing team and assign a buddy if you can.
  • Don’t overlook socialising and the need for people to get closer to the unwritten culture of the organisation. Consider organising a team event to welcome the new starter.
